Monkey Beach is a 2020 Canadian drama film, directed by Loretta Todd. Her debut narrative feature, the film is an adaptation of Eden Robinson's 2000 novel Monkey Beach. The film stars Grace Dove as Lisamarie, a young Haisla woman in Kitamaat, British Columbia coming to terms with the mysterious disappearance of her brother Jimmy (Joel Oulette). Monkey Beach is a perennial bestseller read in schools and universities; 80,000 copies are in print. It has just been shot as a feature film. Eden won the $50,000 Writers Trust of Canada Fellowship in 2017.
MONKEY BEACH is a supernatural coming-of-age story, layering tragedy, humour, and redemption. Set in the magnificent forests and waterways of the Pacific Northwest and the Haisla village of Kitamaat, Haisla cultural stories are woven into the contemporary lives of Lisa and her family, along with a cast of otherworldly characters including Sasquatches – the ‘monkeys’ of Monkey Beach.
